If you weigh over 200 pounds or bring a big dog, go to the Skatinger 11 ft 6, the only pick at the length iROCKER's chart suggests for that weight. Lighter riders who want the lightest board can look at the SereneLife 10 ft 6, but read its max load with care.

Before you paddle
- Bring a life jacket. The US Coast Guard treats a paddle board used outside a swimming, surfing or bathing area as a vessel, so you need a Coast Guard approved life jacket. Wear it, do not just strap it to the deck.
- Dress for the water, not the air. The National Weather Service says cold shock can hit in water of 50 to 60 degrees F about as hard as in 35 degree water.
- Pick the right leash. On rivers and other moving water, use a quick-release leash so you can get free of the board if it snags.
- Stay under the practical load. Keep rider plus gear at or under about 80 percent of the max load on the listing.

- Weight first. iROCKER's size guide calls weight the most critical factor. Its chart pairs riders under 140 pounds with 31 to 32 inch widths, 140 to 200 pounds with 32 to 33 inches, and over 200 pounds with 32 to 34 inches and 11'6" to 12'6" of length.
- Six inches thick. All six picks are 6 inches thick. iROCKER says many boards are only 4 inches thick and flex in the middle under an adult.
