How much PSI does an inflatable paddle board need?
Updated
Most inflatable paddle boards run at 12 to 15 PSI. Roc and iROCKER both give that range. Below about 10 PSI the board goes soft and bends, per iROCKER. Above the maker's max you stress the seams. Check the max for your own board, because it varies: 13 PSI on one pick here and 20 on another.
Max pressure on the six picks
| Board | Pressure on the listing | Pump in the kit |
|---|---|---|
| Skatinger 11 ft 6 | 20 PSI (bullets) | Dual-action pump. Maker claims full size in under 10 minutes |
| Aqua Plus 11 ft | 15 PSI max | Double-action pump |
| Retrospec Weekender | 15 PSI max | Dual-action pump |
| SereneLife 10 ft 6 | 13 PSI max | Double-action hand pump |
| Roc 10 ft 6 | Not on the listing. Roc's FAQ says 12 to 15 | Not named in the listing text |
| Tower 10 ft 4 | Not on the listing | High-pressure pump |
Why the gauge reads zero at first
Roc's FAQ says the pump gauge usually shows nothing until about 5 PSI, even though the board can look and feel full at about 3 PSI. Keep pumping. Roc also says you cannot overinflate its boards with the included hand pump. That is Roc's claim about its own boards and pump, not a rule for every board.
How long pumping takes
- Skatinger claims under 10 minutes with its dual-action pump. Owners in the review summary say 15 minutes or less.
- Tower owners say about 7 minutes to reach 11 PSI.
- The Aqua Plus listing says to start in double-action mode, then switch to single action once the pressure is higher. The last few PSI are the hardest.
Pump failures are a common owner complaint on the SereneLife, Aqua Plus and Tower. If yours fails, a spare hand pump is worth packing.
How to pick the number
- Roc says to set pressure by rider height and weight and by the temperature. Stand on the board. If the nose and tail sit flat on the water, it is inflated right.
- iROCKER suggests 15 PSI for normal paddling and 15 to 16 for a heavy paddler or extra cargo, on boards rated for it.
- Heat raises pressure. iROCKER says a board in the sun on shore can climb past its set PSI, so let out 2 to 3 PSI if you cannot find shade. Roc says you may need slightly less air on a hot day.
- Cold lowers pressure. Recheck after the board has been in cold water a while.
Pressure is also why heavier riders need to read the max PSI. See max load vs rider weight, or compare all six on the roundup.
