Paddle board width and length: what each one changes
Updated
Width is the main thing that makes a board feel stable. Length decides how well it glides and goes straight. iROCKER's size guide puts most first-time buyers on boards 10 to 11 feet long and 31 to 35 inches wide, and says an inflatable should be 6 inches thick.
The size chart by weight
| Paddler weight | Width | Thickness | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 140 lb | 31 to 32 in | 5 to 6 in | 9' to 10'6" |
| 140 to 200 lb | 32 to 33 in | 6 in | 10'6" to 11' |
| Over 200 lb | 32 to 34 in | 6 in | 11'6" to 12'6" |
From iROCKER's beginner size guide. It is the same chart the weight checker uses.
Width: stability vs speed
- iROCKER calls a 29 to 30 inch board fast but like a balance beam for a beginner.
- It recommends 32 to 34 inches for new paddlers.
- It says boards wider than 34 inches can be hard to paddle. The wider the board, the farther you reach to the side.
For yoga, fishing or a dog, we lean to 33 inches or more, because you spend more time standing still or shifting weight.
Length: turning vs gliding
- Under 10 feet turns fast but feels twitchy, per iROCKER.
- 10'6" to 11' is the middle ground it recommends for beginners.
- Over 12 feet is built for speed and going straight, and is harder to turn.
Touring
For long distance, you want a longer board and more capacity for gear. iROCKER says touring boards often carry 350 to 450 pounds. All six picks here are all-around boards from 10'4" to 11'6". The longest, the Skatinger 11 ft 6, has a 450 pound max load, but its 35 inch width is built for stability, not speed. If touring is your main use, look for a board over 12 feet.
Where the six picks land
| Board | Length | Width | Thickness | Paddles well with |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Skatinger 11 ft 6 | 11'6" | 35 in | 6 in | 315 to 360 lb |
| Roc 10 ft 6 | 10'6" | 33 in | 6 in | 245 to 280 lb |
| Tower 10 ft 4 | 10'4" | 32 in | 6 in | 231 to 264 lb |
| Aqua Plus 11 ft | 11' | 33 in | 6 in | 230 to 262 lb |
| SereneLife 10 ft 6 | 10'6" | 32 in | 6 in | 193 to 220 lb |
| Retrospec Weekender | 10'6" | 32 in | 6 in | 193 to 220 lb |
- The Aqua Plus 11 ft at 11 feet by 33 inches is a close match for the 140 to 200 pound row. The caveat: owners report valve leaks.
- The Roc 10 ft 6 at 33 inches is a good width for most beginners. The caveat: its length suits riders up to about 200 pounds on the chart.
- The Tower 10 ft 4 is the shortest here, so it turns easily but glides less. The caveat: no leash in the kit.
Thickness
All six are 6 inches thick. iROCKER says many boards are only 4 inches thick and bend in the middle under an adult, which it calls the taco effect. At 6 inches and full pressure, an inflatable feels close to a hard board. See PSI and pumping for the pressure side.
